José was practically born in the saddle. He began riding at the age of three and grew up in the countryside, surrounded by animals — a way of life that taught him, from an early age, to respect the rhythm of nature. After decades working in Lisbon, he decided to return to his roots and fulfil a long-held dream. Founded in 2011, Cavalos na Areia is today an inseparable part of Comporta’s identity. What started with just a handful of horses has grown steadily and sustainably, and today the project includes more than seventy horses, supported by a team that shares the same vision.
A true horse whisperer, warm and full of stories, José Ribeira is one of the region’s ambassadors and contributes to Comporta’s recognition beyond borders. In his daily life, he maintains a deep and active connection with the local community.
